Why do food items have genders? Bread is “it”, Wine is “he”
The topic “Groceries” (Lebensmittel) is essential for everyday life, whether you are at a supermarket or a restaurant. However, for English speakers, it is confusing because food items are assigned arbitrary grammatical genders.
A classic example: “Bread”. In English, it is just “it”. In German, it is neutral (das Brot). But “Wine” is masculine (der Wein), and “Butter” is feminine (die Butter). There is no physical reason why salt (das Salz) is neutral while pepper (der Pfeffer) is masculine.
Trying to find strict logic here is often futile. Why is “Cheese” (der Käse) a “he” and “Cream” (die Sahne) a “she”? To avoid confusion at the counter, the best strategy is to use visual associations.
